{"id":2823,"date":"2015-07-30T12:00:29","date_gmt":"2015-07-30T12:00:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/zaakistan.com\/wordpress\/?p=2823"},"modified":"2015-07-30T12:00:29","modified_gmt":"2015-07-30T12:00:29","slug":"the-call-to-arms-auguste-rodin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/zaakistan.com\/dir\/index.php\/2015\/07\/30\/the-call-to-arms-auguste-rodin\/","title":{"rendered":"The Call to Arms (Auguste Rodin)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/zaakistan.com\/photos\/blog9\/call3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Several sculptures by the master sculptor Auguste Rodin moved me when I visited the Mus\u00e9e des Beaux Arts of Montreal with Amber.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus and Mary Magdalene &#8211; the way she supported his head on her arm.<br \/>\nDamned Women (for the Gates of Hell) &#8211; the way one leans into the other.<br \/>\nThe Hand of God &#8211; the tenderness of the massive hand as it holds the unveiled couple in the block of marble<br \/>\nThe Thinker (or Dante Alighieri sitting atop the Gates of Hell)<br \/>\nVictor Hugo and his Muse<br \/>\nThe Head of John the Baptist<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/zaakistan.com\/photos\/blog9\/call4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But the one that transfixed me for the longest time was The Defense or The Call to Arms. It is a female angel figure above a surprised, hopeful, yet bewildered looking man reaching for his sword.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/zaakistan.com\/photos\/blog9\/call2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/zaakistan.com\/photos\/blog9\/call1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The angel is very striking in her posture with her arms outstretched in fists, but the expression on her face is what captured me the most. She is in agony, fighting back tears. She is desperate and almost unreachable. She is forceful and quivering.
